The World Series of Poker of 2014 could hardly go any better for the young German pro. Nearing the end of May, with the Series not even officially underway, Dominik Nitsche managed to put his hands on the very first WSOP bracelet to be awarded this summer.
Nitsche decided to put out the $10,000 buy in and take part in the WSOP National Championship, which gathered 126 players this year. He went on to win it, announcing the year of Germany on this year’s WSOP, although he jokingly stated that every year is basically the year of Germany, because they just win everything anyways.
This was the second bracelet of Nitsche’s career, with the first one coming back in 2012, in a $1,000 No Limit Hold’em Event. With this great start of 2014, he was on his way to Las Vegas to see what the poker gods had in store for him.
Twenty events have come and Nitsche took part in fair amount of tournaments, but the second bracelet remained elusive. Then he registered for the Event #21, another $1,000 NLHE tourney, and when that event came to its natural end last night, Nitsche was high on happiness as he managed to score the second bracelet of the summer and number three of his career.
When the final table was eventually down to heads-up, Dominik Nitsche seemed to have his work cut out for him, as Dave D’Alesandro had better than 2.5:1 chip advantage over the German pro. This, however, did not deter Nitsche, as was clear from his short tweet:
hu for the bracelet. slightly less than a 2-1 underdog in chips but i got this!!
At the time, it may have seemed a bit cocky, but on the other hand, Nitsche has demonstrated time and time again that he’s got what it takes to win. And after a long heads-up battle, he managed to turn the things in his favor, leveled the stacks, and then proceeded to take the chips off D’Alesandro until he had no more betting discs to utilize.
It was a big win for Nitsche. Not only that he has claimed his third WSOP bracelet, but in doing so at the young age of 23, he has become the youngest three-time bracelet winner in the history. He eclipsed the previous record held by Phil Hellmuth, who achieved this feat at the age of 24.
Dominik was not trying to hide his excitement in an interview for WSOP.com after the event. It was a no small matter, and he was happy to share his thoughts after it was all said and done.
I have been playing poker for seven years. At this rate, I really think I can catch Hellmuth (who has 13 wins, to date). Of course, he and Phil Ivey are great players so to be talked in the same breath as them is really something for me. I will just say I am really proud to come to Las Vegas where I have enjoyed a lot of success over the years.
No doubt Hellmuth will have to say something on the matter, but no one can deny that Dominik Nitsche is a great, talented young player with a bright future ahead of him and most likely at least couple more bracelets are in store for him!
