Poker is a popular card game with numerous variations, each offering a unique twist on the classic game. Online gambling sites often feature a wide range of poker types to cater to players with different preferences.
The rise of crypto poker sites, such as Litecoin gambling sites, has seen some different games being spread that aren’t normally found on the bigger platforms. So if you can’t find what you’re looking for, check out some of the smaller outfits.
Here are some of the most common poker games you can expect to find on gambling sites:
Texas Hold'em
Texas Hold'em is the most popular poker game worldwide, featured in major tournaments like the World Series of Poker, the World Poker Tour, and the European Poker Tour. Most often seen in the no limit format, known as the Cadillac of poker, this is the game which put poker on the map in the 1990s.
In Texas Hold'em, each player is dealt two face down hole cards, followed by five community cards dealt face-up in the middle of the table. Players must make the best five-card hand using any combination of their hole cards and community cards.
Pot Limit Omaha
Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) is the second most popular poker variant, known for its action-packed gameplay. The swings are wild with much bigger downswings possible than what you’d expect in NL Hold’em. That said, it’s great fun and perfectly suited to players who like to play with adrenaline flowing through their veins.
In PLO, each player is dealt four hole cards instead of two, and they must use exactly two of their hole cards and three community cards to make the best hand. This game is played in a pot-limit betting structure—although limit and no limit is possible—which means the maximum bet a player can make is the current size of the pot.
Seven Card Stud
Seven Card Stud was once the most popular poker game around before the rise of Texas Hold'em. In this game, each player is dealt a combination of face-down and face-up cards over multiple betting rounds. Players must make the best five-card hand from their seven cards, with no community cards involved.
A key skill in seven card stud is being able to quickly take note of all the face up cards in other players’ hands before any hands are folded.
Five Card Draw
Five Card Draw is the original classic poker game that many players learn before moving on to other variations. It was particularly popular in computer game format.
Players are dealt five cards face down and can choose to draw a replacement for any number of their cards. The goal is to make the best five-card hand after a single draw and betting round.
H.O.R.S.E. & Eight-Game
H.O.R.S.E. is a mixed game format that combines five different poker variations: Limit Texas Hold'em, Omaha Hi/Lo, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo.
Players rotate through each game in the order of the acronym, testing their skills across the different variants.
Eight-Game is simply H.O.R.S.E. with NL Hold’em, PLO, and 2-7 Triple Draw.
2-7 Triple Draw is a lowball draw variant of poker where the goal is to make the lowest possible five-card hand. Each player is dealt five cards and can discard any number of them in each of the three draw rounds.
Aces are high, and straights and flushes count against the player. The game is usually played as a fixed-limit game, with smaller bets in the first two betting rounds and larger bets in the final two rounds.
These are just a few of the many common poker games you can find on gambling sites. Each variation offers unique gameplay and strategic elements, catering to a wide range of players.
